Question & Answer time with Lisa Warren

We want everyone to get to know our design team members better, so in the off weeks with no new sketches being posted, we will be featuring each one of them.   We are starting with the very talented Lisa Warren.

Lisa Ann Warren.   My maiden name is Heyhoe, hence my blog address…

What are three adjectives you would use to best describe yourself?

I’m a dreamer, creative and kind-hearted.

Can you tell us a little about your family and/or pets?

I met my hubby Andrew 14 years ago (we used to work together).  We were friends for 2 years before we became a couple because both of us were so shy (awwwh).  We’ve now been married for 7½ years and have two children – Seth (5) and Emeline (3).  Our kids are so much fun and little mischievous – I can’t remember my life before them now and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.   This January we added a dog to the family – a scruffy mutt from an animal rescue group.  He’s named “Marley Hindmarsh Warren” – our son named him after his favourite book and his favourite football player.  We have no idea what breed he is, but we love him just the same – he’s our “Disney” dog.

How long have you been scrapbooking?

I’ve been scrapbooking for 5 years now and I honestly can’t imagine my life without it!

Why did you begin scrapbooking?

A friend asked me along to “some photo thingy” and as a favour, I went along.  I’d never even heard of Creative Memories and I wasn’t sure it was for me.  My first page was a shocker and the consultant talked me into having my own workshop.  After that one I was hooked.  I had visions of scrapbooking for the rest of my life and had plans for many many albums.   I even signed up as a CM consultant and did really well.  When I became pregnant with my daughter, I wasn’t able to continue with classes as I was so sick, so I deactivated.   That’s when I found the dark side (lol) and there’s been no turning back!

What has been the most interesting or exciting scrapbooking experience you’ve had?

This year, I won an Award for Excellence in Design from For Keeps Creative Scrapbooking magazine.   I found out I’d won when a courier delivered the biggest box of product to my door!   I remember thinking to myself “I haven’t ordered anything”. Lol.   It was the first time I had been published too.   I have since been published in both For Keeps and Scrapbook Creations magazines and have been commissioned to do some special features.

I remember too attending the CM conferences – I used to cry my eyes out, it was that exciting!!!  Being in a room with 1000 likeminded people, hearing inspirational stories, cheering everyone’s successes, seeing the new product being released and being entertained by some of the best Aussie musicians was just incredible!   They were 4 days of non-stop fun…I haven’t experienced anything like it since.

What is your favorite manufacturer(s)?

To be honest, I don’t have a favourite manufacturer – that’s like asking me which of my children I love more.   Sure I don’t love everything that’s released, but I can usually see the good in it.   I really love to mix up the manufacturers on my layouts – the more the better.   Stand outs in my stash at the moment are Scenic Route, Luxe Designs, Tinkering Ink, GCD, American Crafts, Basic Grey, Bella, Blueye Dezines, Sassafras Lass, KI Memories – too many to mention.

What are your favorite colors?

My favourite colour is blue and most of my house is painted in different shades – it’s a very calming colour.   My favourite scrapping colours, though, seem to change with the seasons.   This winter (don’t forget I’m in the southern hemisphere here) I have been inspired by really bright colours – they just seem to take the drabness out of winter and make me feel happy.   Now as we move into Spring, I’m starting to tone it down a little.

What product(s) can you not live without right now?

I love love love American Crafts Thickers – I have about 40 packets on my Clip It Up!   I also love Elle’s Studio journaling spots.  Both of which you will find on nearly every layout I do.   I also can’t live without my Bella photo tape and foam sheets.

Where do you find inspiration?

Inspiration is everywhere…magazines, blogs, online galleries, advertising, music, conversations, you name it, its out there waiting.

What do you do when you get stuck in a “scrappers rut” or a “creative block”?

This happens to all of us, so don’t fret.   If it’s a particular layout, I just walk away for a while and come back to it when I feel fresh.   If I just can’t start, I might read some mags, or blog surf for inspiration.  Using some favourite product or a fresh batch of photos can help, but my all time rut breaker is to pull out a sketch!   The hard work has been done for you – you just need to pick out some photos and put it together…hence why I love Inspired Blueprints!

What is your favorite scrapping snack?

I don’t usually eat when I’m scrapping at home, in fact sometimes I forget to eat if I’m in the groove.  If I’m out at a crop and there are lollies (candy for US readers, lol) on the table, I’m right into it.

What kind of camera do you have?

I have an Olympus Tough Lite 850SW – it’s a fantastic compact digital camera and fits perfectly in my handbag.   I carry it with me everywhere just in case anything “snapworthy” comes my way.   I desperately want to purchase a digital slr, but I can’t make up my mind which one.

Do you shoot pictures in manual or automatic?

Oooooh, I’m an auto girl (sorry…lol).  My camera has the most amazing functions on it, so I’m able to change it up given the situation…natural light, super macro, candlelight, you name it.   It even does multiphotos per second, so I often set it on this mode when I’m taking photos of my kids…then I’m guaranteed to catch their smile.

What is your favorite thing(s) to photograph?

My children of course – they are always in front of my camera (poor kids)!   I love taking photos of feet and shoes…I feel they’re highly overlooked, but they take me everywhere.   I also love taking photos of the details – I just want to remember it all.

Do you have any hobbies besides scrapbooking?

Are there hobbies other than scrapbooking?  Just kidding…let’s see, I love card-making, stamping, photography (notice a theme here).   When I’m not scrapping, I just love to watch a good chick flick or listen to music (daggy 80’s really loudly).

What is your best piece of advice to share with other scrapbookers?

Just enjoy it…you don’t need to have the newest of everything on your pages and fill up your house with product (although, shopping is fun, isn’t it girls?!!).   In the years to come, your family won’t care what product is on your page – they’re more interested in the photos and the stories, so don’t forget to include journaling!!   Lastly, please try to use your own handwriting – its cheap to use, finishes of pages quickly and is unique to you!   I still have the last Christmas card my great grandmother gave me – the card itself was a cheap one out of a packet, but her handwriting makes it priceless.
